Back to Leg 8 Photos | ||||
Until I started building these pages, it didn't occur to me that we had actually had two separate trips during this leg. The first was from Fiji to Bora Bora, the second from Bora Bora to Huahine, Fakarava, Rangiroa, back to Huahine, then Raiatea. The first had a sequence of friends/crew consisting of Phil, John, and Darden, while the second was the traditional Conni and Bill crew. Conni arrived in Bora Bora and from there we sailed to Huahine, a lovely island. We took advantage of a four-day wind hole to motor to Fakarava to the East. After several days there, we sailed over the top of Fakarava and on to Rangiroa, an island that we had visited as we came through from our original Pacific crossing. We entered the Rangiroa lagoon through Avatoru Pass, a large but somewhat shalllow pass. We departed Rangiroa through Tiputa Pass, a deep but inherently dangerous pass through which I will never again travel! Not never, not nohow. Two years ago, we entered French Polynesia at Taioha'e Bay, Nuku Hiva, sailed to Manihi, then Rangiroa, and on to Papeete on Tahiti. After dropping Chip, our crewmate, we sailed overnight to Raiatea where we left Wings. The map below will allow you to interpret our two trips so far. Trip 1: Taioha'e Bay, Nuku Hiva; Manihi; Rangiroa; Papeete, Tahiti; Raiatea. Trip 2: Bora Bora; Fare on Huahine-Nui; Rotoava on Fakarava; Avatoru on Rangiroa, moving to Tiputa on Rangiroa; back to Huahine, then to Raiatea.
