Sink Repair

We do have twin sinks in our galley, but the inside one, closer to the boat's midline, is our main sink since it has fresh water via a foot pump rather than the electric pump. We use less water and don't use electrical energy by using that sink and pump

This is what faced us when we arrived. Not only was the sink disconnected from the drain hose, but the flange itself was broken. As Conni said, this is a quality of life issue.

After some work cleaning the various parts, we were here.

I could think of no way to fit the broken piece into the flange and keep it there other than some electrical tape. I carefully joined the fragment to the tape and stretched it around the flange. I made several complete wraps.

The tape kept pieces aligned and together, but offered little mechanical strength. Enter coppper wire to provide some force prevening the pieces from falling outward when the tail piece and flange were joined. The pan below caught a lot of debris from falling into the cabinet. I had already placed a small cloth in the neck of the flange hose to prevent clogs.

We admit it's a lot of caulk, but we still think that it was appropriate. It's good caulk and is rated for metal and other materials. We couldn't get the caulk gun tip into the close quarters, so we dabbed it on the parts via a tongue depressor.

We've wedged the parts together at this point. Surprisingly little caulk was squeezed from the parts. You can now see the reason for the copper wire girdle. I smoothed the caulk for appearance sake.

Rather than hold things until the caulk cured, we placed some scrap wood to force the tailpiece and hose flange together. We had planned to keep the blocks in place until the caulk cured, but we think that they'll be permanent fixtures until I can remove the parts to bring home and replace.

PS. We tested the repair two days later and it's waterproof and held together. Done.
